ITEC 601 Computer Fundamentals for Teachers

Course Description

Students learn computer terminology and operation in preparation for advanced applications courses. Extensive use of microcomputers in a hands-on learning environment. Topics include hardware, software, word processing, and social issues related to computer-based technologies.

 

 

Course Objectives

The student will

 

 

  • Demonstrate knowledge and/or understanding of appropriate uses of computer  based technology in teaching and learning
  • Demonstrate competency in operation, care, and basic troubleshooting of related computer hardware and/or software
  • Use computers to communicate through printed and presentation media and through email
  • Use established selection criteria to evaluate education technology materials
  • Demonstrate knowledge and/or understanding of legal and ethical issues related to the use of computer-based technology
  • Demonstrate knowledge and/or understanding of copyright, privacy, security, and safety issues related to the use of computer-based technology in the classroom
  • Demonstrate the ability to assess the authenticity, reliability and bias of data gathered using electronic research tools
  • Use database application and spreadsheet applications to manipulate and analyze data
  • Identify student  learning styles and determine appropriate technological resources to improve learning

Course Requirements

 

 

 

  1. This class meets five times. Anyone absent from class may be dropped from the course automatically.
  2. Turn in assignments on time. Some class time will be available to work on projects. However, due to time limitation, students will have to work outside of scheduled class time to complete assignments. To reserve lab time at the Burk Hall Computer Lab, Room 214, call 415.338.6364.
  3. Participation and discussion are important processes in the class. They are included in the grading procedure. Share what you know. Share what you learn. We learn from each other.
  4. Establish and maintain e-mail connection with the instructor.

Course Assignments

1.
Class Participation/Readings/Attendance: Readings will be assigned. They will be discussed in class. It is important that you are present to share your views. Due to the hands-on nature of the class and the various levels of technology skills of the participants, student mentoring is encouraged. It is important that you are present to share your expertise.

2.
Assignments: Assignments are due at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated. Instructor reserves the right to deduct points from assignments turned in late. The Microsoft Office Suite will be used extensively in class and for homework assignments.

3.
Email: Some assignments will require students to email responses or attachments. All students must have an email account and access to the Internet outside of ITEC 601 class time.
